DEER HUNT SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 2010 AT NFP

A controlled antlerless deer hunt has been scheduled by the Montgomery County Department of Parks & Heritage Services for Wednesday, January 13, 2010 between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  Hunters will be chosen by a lottery.  The chosen hunters will be required to hunt from self-climbing tree stands with a safety harness and to use 12-gauge shotguns containing slug ammunition – no buckshot is allowed.  The equipment will be provided by the hunters.  The hunt will be closely monitored for safety and compliance with Pennsylvania Game Commission laws.  The Park will be closed to the public on the day of the hunt.

According to the Department of Parks & Heritage Services, the reason for the deer hunt is

“to bring the herd, into alignment with the 690-acre park’s available resources.  It’s also hoped that a reduction in the number of deer will decrease deer/vehicle accidents on roadways surrounding the park and lessen the spread of Lyme disease.”

The deer that are shot will be eaten by the hunters or the meat will be sent to a food bank.

For more information, call the Park at 610-270-0215 or go to the Park’s website at         www.parks.montcopa.org.
