We are sad to report that Joseph E. Doyle, who monitored the Doctor’s House Trail, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009 at Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, PA after a short illness. He was 82. Joe who resided at Shannondell in Audubon, was a former resident of King of Prussia, PA. He graduated from Villanova with a BS in Electrical Engineering, and worked for Strainsert, in W. Conshohocken, PA. Joe was a trainer in the US Navy from 1944-1946, where he traveled to San Francisco. Born in Norwood, PA on Dec. 27, 1926, he was the son of John F. and Josephine (Burns) Doyle. Surviving are his loving family, including three sons, Christian G. Doyle of Baltimore, MD, John E. Doyle and his wife Karla of Phila, PA and Peter J. Doyle of New York City, NY, two daughters, Lorraine M. Posobiec and her husband John of E. Norriton, Pa and Mary E. Doyle of Phoenixville, PA, four grandchildren, Jack, Kevin, Catherine and Dylan, a sister, Bernadette Sherm of Palm Harbor, FL, many nieces and nephews, and his former wife, Janice (McCarthy) Doyle. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Doyle and a sister, Peg Bourgiois. He also had a foster son, Bill Ford. Joe had many hobbies and interests. One of his first interests was auto racing. He owned a red and black 1956 Austin Healy sports car that he drove in rallies, including Watkins Glen. He enjoyed woodworking, and was always involved in a project. Some of his projects were adding 3 bedrooms on the third floor of his split level in King of Prussia, making tables and an entertainment center, birdhouses, and more recently, a wheelchair ramp for a friend. He was involved with the pool league and woodshop club at Shannondell. He took his family on many camping trips. He was especially fond of Rickett’s Glen State Park, which has a wonderful hiking trail with 21 beautiful waterfalls. He enjoyed watching sporting events, such as Villanova football and basketball, the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, and watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and performances. He was a quiet man, but he was always there for his family, attending all graduations, picnics and holiday gatherings. He enjoyed walks in Valley Forge National Park and the Norristown Farm Park, and was interested in bird watching. He traveled to Conowingo Dam in Maryland, where he saw Bald Eagles. Mill Grove in Audubon and Hawk Mountain were also favorite places to bird watch. Two years ago, he, along with his daughter Lorrie and son-in-law John, monitored the ten birdhouses along the Doctor’s House trail in the Norristown Farm Park. This past year, Lorrie and John started monitoring another trail, so Joe took over monitoring the Doctor’s House trail, along with his daughter Mary. Memorial contributions may be made in Joseph’s memory to the Norristown Farm Park Association, P.O. Box 281, Fairview Village, PA 19409-0281. In Joe Doyle’s honor, the FPPA will rename the Doctor’s House Trail, the Joe Doyle Trail. A plaque indicating that will be placed at the beginning of the trail.
