Park In The Dark On Friday October 30, the Park In The Dark Event was held at Norristown Farm Park jointly sponsored by the Montgomery County Parks & Heritage Services and the Farm Park Preservation Association. The program was an evening of spine-tingling stories and things that go bump in the night. Groups moved along the trail, pausing for stories and some may even have seen spirits! To begin the event, a presentation was given about adaptations of nocturnal wildlife and human adaptations that help us move around in the dark. There were stories about the Farmer and the Scarecrow; Elwood Thomas, a former patient at the state hospital; Phineas Cobb, a civil war soldier; the Maiden and Her Love; the Woodsman and the Goblins; and the Old Man on the Porch. Positive comments from the children and adults who attended indicated that all enjoyed the excitement of the evening! The fees were reasonable at $3 for children 7 – 12 and $4 for ages 13 through adult. Proceeds will go to support the Monarch Butterfly Way Station and the Vernal Pool Habitat in the Norristown Farm Park. This was the first program of what is expected to be an annual event. Since it was a maiden effort, with a limited volunteer staff from Parks & Heritage and the FPPA, the publicity was limited to keep the attendance to a manageable number. Now that we know the potential for a large attendance at future events, we will expand the publicity effort next year, and solicit more volunteers from you, our members, and anyone else interested in participating in this great event.
